Baudin plans to stay on at Ile de France until December. He boards with a genteel widow Madame Kerivel who has become a friend. The cargo of live animals and plants recuperate in the widow’s country garden. Despite his determined optimism, Baudin dies on 16 September. Few of his crew mourn his passing.
