In the Gulf of Carpentaria the gentlemen explore Groote Eylandt. On 14 January they find Aboriginal paintings on rock inside a cavern on Chasm Island. At Morgan Island in Blue-Mud Bay the crew get into a skirmish with the locals. One of the party shoots an Aboriginal man dead. Thomas Morgan dies of sunstroke after his hat is stolen.
