Arriving at the Cape of Good Hope, the ship is restocked while the scientific gentlemen explore. Mr Crosley the Astronomer relinquishes the expedition, having failed to find his sea legs. Flinders takes on the role of Surveyer as well as ship Commander. On 4 November they quit the Cape. One month later they sight the extreme south-westerly point of the Australian continent. Captain Flinders names it Cape Leeuwin.
